Thoughts on Ephesians 1

Today’s reading: Ezekiel 25; Ephesians 1

It’s easy, especially with a blog about the Bible, to assume my readers know the gospel and to not really talk much about it, but even for us who already believe, it is good always to be reminded of the fundamental truths of our faith.

Ephesians 1 is an important chapter when it comes to these fundamental truths. Paul lays out a laundry list of truths about us “in Christ.” Over and over again he calls out and clarifies that these things are only true of us when/because we are in Christ. Because Jesus is the Son, when we are in Him, we too are sons, adopted into God’s family as His beloved children. Inheriting Jesus’ status of sonship, we also inherit all that that sonship entails, predestination to glory, inheritance in eternity, etc. More than that, God sends the Holy Spirit to live and work in us, meaning that the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is at work in us.

All of this is available to us by faith. When we get into the beginning of Ephesians 2, Paul clarifies, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

It is not by our works, our righteousness, or our sinlessness that we are saved, but merely by our faith. When we place our faith in Christ, trusting in His death and resurrection on our behalf to pay for sin and purchase our redemption, we are placed into Christ, thereby having all these truths of sonship apply to us.

It’s worth spending some time today reading and meditating on the truths of Ephesians 1, never letting them become “old hat” or “too basic” to be worth the time and consideration.
