John (JBT)

Intro to the JBT

Chapter 1

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things were created through Him, and apart from Him not a single thing was created that has been created. 4In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.

6There came a man, sent from God, whose name was John. 7He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him. 8He himself was not the light, but he came to testify about the light.

9The true light, who gives light to every man, was coming into the world. 10He was in the world, and the world was created through Him, but the world did not recognize Him. 11He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. 12But as many as have received Him – those who believe in His name – to them He has given the right to become children of God, 13not born by human parents,[b] nor by the desire of the flesh, nor by the will of man, but by God.

14Now the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory – glory as of the One and Only from the Father – full of grace and truth. 15John testified about Him, and shouted out, saying, “This was He about whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is greater than I am, for He existed before me.’” 16From His fullness we have all received grace upon grace, 17for the law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God. The One and Only, Himself God, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has made Him known.

19Now this is John’s testimony, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20He confessed and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” 21So they asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22Then they said to him, “Who are you, so that we might give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?” 23He said, “I am the voice crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’[c] just as Isaiah the prophet has said.” 24(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) 25So they asked and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah nor the Prophet?” 26John answered them saying, “I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, 27He who is coming after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie!” 28These things happened in Bethany, across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
